…the keyless relay attack
We’ve said for decades – “Never leave anything of value in an unattended vehicle in Costa Rica. Never. Anywhere. Even for a minute.” It’s the only way to ensure your valuables will not be stolen.
First there were “fob blockers” that prevented the doors from locking when you pushed the button on the remote clicker so they told you to lock the doors manually with the key.
Now with the “keyless relay attack” you have to assume that thieves can defeat the most modern security to unlock your car instantly no matter how you lock it.
How it works
It’s simple really.
For convenience modern vehicles sense an encrypted signal and automatically unlock when the key is a few feet away.
The keyless entry attack has two parts. 1) someone who stands near you in the supermarket or at the restaurant with a device that captures the encrypted signal from the key in your pocket and sends it to 2) someone who’s next to your car with a device that rebroadcasts the encrypted signal convincing your car that the key is nearby. The car unlocks.
What to do?
Never leave anything of value in an unattended vehicle in Costa Rica. Never. Anywhere. Even for a minute.
