Twenty five years ago there were a dozen barge ferries operating around Costa Rica but nearly all of them have been replaced by bridges. It’s a unique experience when they flop the ramps into the mud at the river’s edge and you drive your SUV to the far end of the barge to tip the weight off of the ramps so the ferry can pull off of the bank and motor to the opposite shore.
